Summer Encampment Applications Open!
The 246th Battalion of the California Cadet Corps of Greenfield High School had 15 cadets attended the Winter Wilderness Skills Course for four days and worked to earn their Specialized Training Ribbon. The cadets learned basic survival skills such as how to start a fire, knife safety, knot tying, and trap making.
The Wilderness Skills Course is preparatory training for cadets thinking of going to Survival Training during the summer. While there, the cadets were welcomed in an environment where everybody was equal and had no ranks. Instructors showed cadets basic survival skills such as fire starting, shelter building, and water purification. On the last day, cadets faced challenging weather conditions with some tents even flooding, but they prevailed and completed the course because in a true survival situation, one has no control over the weather.
Overall, The Wilderness Skill Course was fun and an opportunity for the cadets to learn basic survival skills and interact with each other through learning. Cadets also stated that they would take the course again if they had the chance.
The 246th Battalion of the California Cadet Corps of Greenfield High School held a Fall Awards Night to award and promote cadets for their dedication and improvement. Family and friends gathered to enjoy dinner and celebrate cadets for their hard work.
The Fall Awards Night was an event to celebrate and recognize the events the cadets completed during the semester. Nearly 30 cadets were promoted and over 200 awards were distributed
At the end of this event many cadets took home awards, some of the awards that were given were PT (Physical Training) for passing the physical fitness exam, Honor Unit the most honorable award one can receive, Color guard, Recondo Badge one of the most difficult to earn. Also at the event, many parents were able to see the efforts of their children and be able to motivate them so that they can surpass themselves if they set their goal. Attending this event allows cadets to honor each other and be honored for their effort, discipline, and loyalty.
The 246th Battalion of the California Cadet Corps of Greenfield High School had twelve cadets attend Recondo, located at Camp San Luis Obispo. Recondo is a training event that allows cadets to complete various challenges to work towards earning the Recondo Badge. Some of the challenges are 8k road march carrying 20 or 30 lbs depending on a person’s body weight, 5k run, map reading test, land navigation course, and marksmanship.
The 246th Battalion of the California Cadet Corps of Greenfield High School had twelve cadets attend Basic Leadership Training located at Fort Hunter Liggett close by King City. Basic Leadership Training is a training event that simulates a Bootcamp training environment during 3 days that helps the cadets to develop their leadership skills. During the 3 days, the cadets completed a PFT, land navigation course, daily PT, color guard & drill basics, a night hike, and a military obstacle course.
The 246th Battalion of the California Cadet Corps of Greenfield High School completed its third Bivouac, located at McGee Creek in the Inyo National Forest, which is located 6 hours away from Greenfield. The cadets experienced 5 days outdoors in a “field” environment. At this Bivouac, the cadets learned many skills, such as knife safety, fire making, fishing, kayaking, collaboration, cohabitation and field safety.
Cadets worked closely with a team of other cadets within their own camp to set up their camp, prepare their meals, build their fires, clean, prepare for outings, and resolve conflicts they might have arisen.
